Republican Leaders Blame Trump and Strategy for Midterm Losses

Republican figures Marjorie Taylor Greene and John Cornyn attributed the GOP's loss of both congressional chambers to Donald Trump and a focus on performative politics.

Republican leaders are attributing the loss of both the House and Senate to the Democratic Party following the midterm elections. Former congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene blamed Donald Trump for the defeat, arguing that his instruction for voters to treat the ballot as if his name were on it caused a backlash. Greene also accused GOP lawmakers of prioritizing Trump's approval over addressing inflation, health insurance costs, and foreign wars.

Outgoing Senator John Cornyn echoed the sentiment of internal failure in a Wall Street Journal opinion piece, citing unforced political errors and divisive rhetoric. Cornyn specifically criticized the nomination of candidates focused on performative politics rather than substantive policy, pointing to the defeat of Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton by Democrat James Talarico as a sign of the party's shrinking appeal. This victory marked the first Democratic Senate win in Texas in nearly four decades.

Cornyn argued that the party failed to maintain the coalition of Black and Hispanic voters that supported Trump in 2024. He urged party leaders to police their own ranks to prevent further declines. Meanwhile, Greene criticized the upcoming lame-duck session, noting that defeated lawmakers will still cast votes on the National Defense Authorization Act and government funding before their terms expire.
