U.S. Senator Thom Tillis criticized President Donald Trump for endorsing Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton over incumbent Senator John Cornyn in the Texas Republican Senate primary. Tillis described the endorsement as a "colossal mistake" and an "unforced error," arguing that the decision jeopardizes the seat.
Paxton defeated Cornyn in May and is now competing against Democratic nominee State Representative James Talarico in the general election. Talarico holds a significant financial advantage, with over $21.5 million on hand compared to Paxton's $1.8 million as of June. To bridge this gap, the Senate Leadership Fund and Trump's MAGA Inc. super PAC have invested millions to support Paxton, including $15 million from MAGA Inc.
Tillis, who is retiring, condemned the use of "loyalty oaths" within the Republican Party. He asserted that targeting party members who are not fully aligned with Trump is unsustainable for lifelong members of the party.
