Taiwan Challenges China's World War II Narrative After US Summit
Taiwan is contesting efforts by Beijing to rewrite World War II history following a Washington summit where Donald Trump and Xi Jinping lauded their nations' wartime alliance.
The Government of the Republic of China is challenging efforts by Beijing to reshape the historical narrative of World War II. The dispute follows a September 24 summit in Washington, D.C., where U.S. President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping highlighted the wartime alliance between their two nations. A White House fact sheet stated the leaders recalled that the U.S. and China "were allies in World War Two and fought side by side to win the war".
Taipei views this narrative as distorted, asserting that the Republic of China—not the People's Republic of China—was the government fighting alongside the Allies. Taiwanese officials express concern that Washington may adopt Beijing's interpretation, which characterizes communist guerrilla forces as the "backbone" of the war effort. Taiwan fears this shift in historical recognition could jeopardize U.S. military support.
In response, Deputy Foreign Minister Francois Wu and the Mainland Affairs Council have accused Beijing of attempting to replace the accurate historical record. They pledged to provide the U.S. with information confirming the Republic of China's role as a steadfast American ally. Domestically, the opposition Kuomintang party has accused the administration of President Lai Ching-te of using the Republic of China's history for political expediency to compete for narrative rights.
