Trump Threatens Canada with Tariffs Over Wildfire Smoke Pollution

President Donald Trump threatened to increase tariffs on Canadian goods, blaming Canada's forest management for hazardous wildfire smoke drifting into the United States.

President Donald Trump announced he will add the financial costs of wildfire smoke pollution to existing tariffs on Canadian goods, accusing Canada of "willful negligence" in forest management and debris removal. The U.S. president stated that the United States is being "unnecessarily invaded by filthy, polluted, and unhealthy air," causing hazardous air quality across the Midwest and Northeast, including cities like Detroit, Chicago, and Washington, D.C.

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney and Ontario Premier Doug Ford rejected the accusations. Carney attributed the catastrophic blazes to climate change and noted that the U.S. refusal to support the Paris Climate Treaty contributes to the problem. Ford condemned Trump's remarks as "unacceptable," reminding the U.S. administration of Canada's history of providing disaster relief to American states. Ford also announced the purchase of 11 new aircraft to combat the fires in Ontario, where 191 active blazes have burned over 650,000 hectares.

U.S. lawmakers have intensified the pressure. Senator Bernie Moreno introduced the CANADA FIRE Act to sanction Canadian officials through asset freezes and visa revocations. Republican representatives from Michigan suggested the U.S. might engage in direct cross-border firefighting if Canada fails to act. In response, Canada's Minister of Emergency Management and Community Resilience, Eleanor Olszewski, defended the national record, citing a C$12 billion investment in forest sustainability since 2020. The diplomatic friction coincides with ongoing trade disputes over lumber, autos, and steel ahead of USMCA renegotiations.
