President Joseph Aoun Demands End to Israeli Occupation

Lebanese President Joseph Aoun rejected foreign interference and Israeli occupation while coordinating ceasefire monitoring and sovereignty efforts with U.S. and French leaders.

Lebanese President Joseph Aoun demanded an end to the Israeli occupation of southern Lebanon and foreign interference, specifically citing Iran, on June 23, 2026. His statements occurred as a fifth round of diplomatic talks between Israel and Lebanon commenced in Washington. Aoun asserted that national sovereignty and the Lebanese state are the only viable options for the country, expressing hope that the Washington negotiations would decisively restore full territorial control.

In a series of diplomatic calls that day, Aoun coordinated with French President Emmanuel Macron regarding the post-UNIFIL phase in southern Lebanon and bilateral relations. He also expressed support for statements from Syrian President Ahmed Al Sharaa affirming Damascus's commitment to Lebanese independence and territorial integrity.

Separately, Aoun spoke with U.S. Vice President JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio. The U.S. officials reaffirmed their support for the Lebanese government's efforts to extend state authority through its army and security forces. The discussion focused on implementing agreements from previous meetings in Switzerland, including the creation of a joint U.S.-Lebanese-Iranian cell to monitor and solidify the ceasefire. The Lebanese Presidency stated that the specific operational arrangements for this monitoring cell remain under review.
