Trump Proposes $5,000 Dividend Checks at GOP Convention

Donald Trump and Republican leaders unveiled a series of policy priorities during a midterm convention in Dallas, headlined by a proposal to issue $5,000 dividend checks to all adult Americans. The President also pledged to make various tax breaks permanent and pass the Save America Act to implement voter identification and restrictions.

To increase pressure on Iran, the administration proposed raising the annual base defense budget by $500 billion to a total of $1.5 trillion. Other GOP commitments include expanding domestic fossil fuel production through permitting reform and implementing a consumer-direct health insurance subsidy plan.

These initiatives face steep legislative challenges. Senate Majority Leader John Thune stated there are not enough votes in the Senate to end the filibuster, which requires 60 votes. Additionally, internal party divisions persist over deficit spending as the U.S. gross debt exceeds $40 trillion. National Economic Adviser Kevin Hassett suggested the dividend checks could be pursued through a special budget reconciliation bill, while Ways and Means Committee Chairman Jason Smith noted the difficulty of securing the necessary votes.
