Trump Launches Operation Economic Outcast to Isolate Iran

President Donald Trump and Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent launched Operation Economic Outcast on August 24, 2026, a campaign described as an economic D-Day designed to isolate Iran from the global financial system. The initiative aims for the economic asphyxiation of the Iranian regime by targeting five critical sectors: digital assets, technology, gold, aviation, and shipping. The United States Department of the Treasury has already sanctioned nearly 60 entities, individuals, and vessels linked to nuclear procurement, cyber operations, and oil revenue.

Treasury Secretary Bessent warned that any nation or financial institution providing a lifeline to Iran risks removal from the U.S. dollar system. While he provided a cure period to avoid destabilizing global markets, he cautioned that the U.S. does not have infinite patience. Iranian officials responded with defiance. Foreign Affairs Minister Abbas Araghchi dismissed the plan as economic terrorism, while Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Qalibaf called the threats bombast. Mohsen Rezaei, secretary of Iran's Supreme National Security Council, warned that Iran would retaliate in a seismic manner and could block all oil exports from the Persian Gulf if the blockade is enacted. The escalation occurs as Iran continues to blockade the Strait of Hormuz, severely disrupting global oil supplies during a conflict that has now lasted six months.
