Greece and Israel Launch €3.1 Billion Achilles Shield Defense Network

Greece and Israel have launched Achilles Shield, a €3.1 billion integrated air and anti-ballistic defense network designed to protect Greek airspace and Aegean islands from drones and missiles. The system integrates Israeli SPYDER, Barak MX, and David's Sling interceptors with existing Greek Patriot batteries, supported by an AI-driven Command and Control system. A supplementary €26 million agreement for Drone Dome systems was also signed.

Benjamin Netanyahu characterized the agreement as a continuation of a decade-long Eastern Mediterranean alliance between Israel, Greece, and Cyprus. While the Greek government views the network as a necessary deterrent against Turkish threats, the deal has faced domestic criticism from opposition parties and former Finance Minister Yanis Varoufakis due to Israel's actions in Gaza.

Türkiye has responded with heightened military readiness. Defense Minister Yasar Guler confirmed that the Turkish Ministry of Defense is preparing for scenarios ranging from increased tension to open war. This military friction coincides with a diplomatic clash in which Israel accused President Recep Tayyip Erdogan of persecuting the Jewish people, a claim Ankara dismissed as cowardly and rotten. Amid these tensions, President Erdogan is scheduled to meet Russian President Vladimir Putin in Kyrgyzstan to discuss the status of Turkish S-400 missile systems.
