Donald Trump Mistakenly Calls Brazil India in Election Post
President Donald Trump mistakenly attributed Brazil's presidential election results to India in a social media post used to criticize American voting systems.
Donald Trump mistakenly referred to Brazil as India in a Truth Social post while commenting on the first round of Brazil's presidential election. He claimed that 125 million people voted in the "first round of India's Presidential Election," using the observation to allege that voting in America is "CORRUPT!!!" and to criticize the speed of U.S. vote counting. The White House Rapid Response account reposted the statement.
In the actual Brazilian election, right-wing candidate Flavio Bolsonaro led incumbent President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva with 47.24% of the vote compared to 44.91%. Because neither candidate reached the 50% threshold, a run-off election is scheduled for October 25. Flavio Bolsonaro is the son of former President Jair Bolsonaro, who is currently serving a 27-year prison sentence for attempting to overturn a previous election via a military coup.
