Andy Burnham Wins Makerfield Seat to Challenge Keir Starmer

Andy Burnham won the Makerfield by-election on June 19, positioning himself to challenge Prime Minister Keir Starmer for the Labour Party leadership.

Andyd Burnham, the Mayor of Greater Manchester, won the Makerfield by-election on June 19, 2026, defeating Reform UK candidate Robert Kenyon with 54.8% of the vote. The decisive victory, which saw a 23-point swing back to Labour, enables Andy Burnham to return to Parliament and formally challenge Prime Minister Keir Starmer for the leadership of the Labour Party.

The contest occurred amid severe internal instability for the government, including the resignations of Defence Secretary John Healey and Health Secretary Wes Streeting. Following the result, approximately 100 Labour MPs and several cabinet ministers urged Starmer to step down or establish a departure timetable. Burnham's allies, including Louise Haigh and Lisa Nandy, have advocated for a managed transition by September to avoid party chaos.

Prime Minister Keir Starmer has defiantly refused to resign, citing his 2024 general election mandate. He has reportedly amassed a six-figure campaign fund from private donors to fight any formal leadership contest. While Starmer offered Burnham a senior cabinet position to deter the challenge, Burnham's team rejected the offer as ludicrous, asserting his goal is to change the party's direction through a platform of business-friendly socialism and regional devolution.

Burnham is scheduled to meet Starmer on Monday to demand a timetable for his departure. Meanwhile, his victory has triggered a Greater Manchester mayoral by-election, scheduled for July 30, as he must resign his mayoral post to take his seat in Westminster.
