Meta Settles Mental Health Claims as US Tariffs Canada

Meta agreed to an $18 billion settlement over child safety while the United States imposed 50% tariffs on Canadian goods following collapsed trade talks.

Several major economic and corporate shifts occurred on August 30, led by Meta Platforms Incorporated, which agreed to a settlement of up to $18 billion to resolve claims that its platforms harmed the mental health of children. As part of the agreement, the company promised to implement daily time limits and remove beautifying filters from its apps.

In international trade, the United States imposed a 50% tariff on various Canadian goods under Section 338 of the Tariff Act of 1930 after trade negotiations collapsed. U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer defended the move, stating there was no possible way the action could really affect U.S. well-being.

Financial markets saw significant volatility and growth. Bitcoin surged up to 23% after U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent decided to double buybacks for longer-dated securities. Meanwhile, Nvidia Inc. reported that its quarterly revenue had doubled and announced a $13 billion acquisition of the AI platform Hugging Face.

Other developments included Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh acknowledging in Jackson Hole that inflation has remained elevated for too long. In Asia, tycoon Mukesh Ambani moved to rein in the Vantara wildlife sanctuary, managed by his son Anant Ambani, following allegations of illegal animal captures.
