Trump Warns Iran as US Strikes Degrade Military Capabilities

The United States and Iran have engaged in a week-long military escalation, effectively breaking a June ceasefire. Donald Trump authorized a fifth consecutive night of strikes on July 16, targeting Qeshm Island and Bandar Abbas to degrade Iranian military capabilities. The U.S. also imposed a naval blockade on Iranian ports and struck a tanker near Kharg Island. President Trump warned that targets could expand to include power plants and bridges, stating, "Next week it gets really bad for them."

Iran retaliated with missiles and drones targeting U.S. military bases in Jordan and assets in Bahrain and Kuwait. The Kuwaiti army intercepted 32 Iranian drones, though debris caused material damage. Iranian officials accused the U.S. of committing war crimes by targeting civilian infrastructure, including wheat silos, a water production facility, and the Tehran–Mashhad railway. In response to the volatility, the U.S. Embassy in Baghdad urged citizens to maintain heightened readiness following a drone attack in Erbil.

Despite the combat, the White House maintains an opening for diplomacy. The release of U.S. citizen Dena Karari from Iranian detention was described by Trump as a "gesture of goodwill," though Iran has denied the release. The Government of Pakistan continues to encourage both sides to resume technical-level talks to restore the peace agreement. Meanwhile, the Government of Dubai Media Office dismissed Reuters reports of explosions in downtown Dubai as false.
