Donald Trump Urges Senate to Make Daylight Saving Permanent

Donald Trump is urging the U.S. Senate to pass the Sunshine Protection Act, also known as the NO MORE CHANGING THE CLOCKS ACT, to make daylight saving time permanent. The president argues that ending the biannual clock shifts would reduce disruption and chaos while helping to fight crime by increasing evening light.

The legislation previously passed the House of Representatives on July 14 with a 308-117 bipartisan vote. It was referred to the Senate Commerce, Science and Transportation Committee on July 15. If the Senate passes the bill and the president signs it by November 1, the United States could avoid the scheduled return to standard time this year.

Opposition remains within the Senate, where Republicans Tom Cotton and John Thune have raised concerns. They warn that permanent daylight saving time would create dangerously dark winter mornings for workers and children, particularly in northern states. The Senate is currently in recess and is scheduled to return on September 14.
