Trump Backs AI Data Centers Amid Midterm Political Backlash

President Donald Trump advocated for AI data center expansion while candidates in key states distance themselves from the industry due to voter concerns over resources.

President Donald Trump expressed strong support for AI data centers during a White House event, arguing that the facilities provide enormous jobs and tax revenue. He characterized the failure to attract such plants as a mistake that would leave locations behind. This federal stance contrasts with a growing trend among midterm candidates who are distancing themselves from data center development due to voter concerns over pollution, water depletion, and electricity costs.

In Ohio, the issue has become a central conflict in the U.S. Senate race between incumbent Senator Jon Husted and former Senator Sherrod Brown. Brown has made opposition to data centers a centerpiece of his campaign, specifically criticizing tax breaks for developers. In response, Husted introduced legislation requiring these companies to pay for their power usage. The National Republican Senatorial Committee warned that data centers are an anchor around Husted's neck and could cost the party the seat.

Similar tensions are appearing in other states. In Texas, Governor Greg Abbott shifted toward tougher regulations and removed sales tax exemptions, a move Trump called a mistake. In Nevada, Democratic candidate Aaron Ford proposed halting new state tax breaks, accusing supporters of catering to billionaire friends. These political shifts align with a May Gallup poll showing 71 percent of Americans oppose AI data center construction in their local areas.
