Senate Democrats Block Congressional Stock Trading Ban Over Voter ID

Senate Democrats blocked the Stop Insider Trading Act on Wednesday, citing a federal voter photo identification requirement as a poison pill provision.

Senate Democrats blocked a motion on Wednesday to advance the Stop Insider Trading Act, a House-passed bill designed to prohibit members of Congress and their immediate families from purchasing individual stocks. The motion failed in a 53-47 vote, falling short of the 60-vote threshold required to overcome a filibuster.

While the legislation sought to increase accountability by requiring the disclosure of stock sales one week in advance, Senate Democrats opposed the measure due to an attached provision requiring photo identification for federal elections. This voter ID requirement is a key component of the SAVE America Act backed by President Donald Trump.

Senate Majority Leader John Thune and bill sponsor Senator Pete Ricketts argued the ban was a commonsense effort to restore integrity to Congress. In contrast, Senate Minority Leader Charles Schumer and Senator Chris Coons characterized the voter ID requirement as a poison pill and a Trojan Horse for voter suppression. Schumer further argued that the bill was flawed because it did not ban stock trading for the president and allowed members to sell existing holdings.

Following the vote, House Majority Whip Steve Scalise accused Democrats of blocking accountability, while Democratic senators maintained that Republicans were using the stock ban as a political tool before the upcoming campaign season.
