Iran Attacks UAE Tanker Amid Strait of Hormuz Negotiations

The United Arab Emirates accused Iran's Revolutionary Guard Corps of launching a missile attack on an Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC) tanker in the Strait of Hormuz on August 8, 2026. The UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs characterized the strike as "acts of piracy" and a violation of UN Security Council Resolution 2817. While no casualties were reported in this specific incident, ADNOC disclosed that 15 of its vessels have been targeted by missiles and drones since hostilities began on February 28, resulting in one death and 20 injuries.

The attack drew widespread condemnation from Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Bahrain, Jordan, and the Gulf Cooperation Council, with officials warning that using the strategic waterway for economic blackmail threatens global energy security. Simultaneously, the United States continued a "maximum pressure" campaign, with the Treasury Department sanctioning Iranian currency exchange houses on August 7. President Donald Trump stated on August 6 that the war with Iran would end "pretty soon."

Despite the escalation, Iran and Oman have reached a framework agreement to restore traffic to the strait via separate inbound and outbound lanes. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi stated that an agreement is "very close," though he cautioned that a full reopening depends on the United States adhering to a June memorandum of understanding and providing compensation for alleged violations of a previous deal.
