President Donald Trump suggested that maintaining certain levels of inflation could rapidly reduce the 40 trillion dollar national debt of the United States. In an interview with Time, Trump stated that while economic growth is a primary method for paying off the debt, inflation serves as a mechanism to do so "very rapidly" by eroding the real value of existing debt and potentially allowing the government to refinance at cheaper rates.
This strategy contrasts with the mandate of the Federal Reserve System, where Chairman Kevin Warsh has stated that above-target inflation will not be tolerated. The central bank is currently mandated to confine inflation to 2%.
Other proposed methods to address the debt-to-GDP ratio, which currently exceeds 120%, include increasing revenues through tariffs and visa fees. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent has specifically advocated for driving economic growth as the primary path forward to allay debt concerns.
