Opposition Protests Paralyze India's Parliament Monsoon Session Opening

The Indian Parliament's Monsoon Session began on July 20, 2026, amid severe deadlock and street unrest. Despite the chaos, the government introduced several pieces of legislation, including the Supreme Court (Number of Judges) Amendment Bill, 2026, and a bill to criminalize insults to the national song, Vande Mataram. Tensions were further heightened by the parliamentary debut of the Nationalist Citizens Party of India, formed by 20 rebel Trinamool Congress MPs, which prompted a symbolic walkout by opposition parties during a pre-session all-party meeting on July 19.
