Canadians Back Mark Carney's Retaliatory Tariffs Against United States

An Ipsos poll reveals that 73% of Canadians support the federal government's decision to abandon trade negotiations with the United States and implement retaliatory tariffs. This response follows the collapse of trade talks and the imposition of tariffs up to 50% on Canadian goods by U.S. President Donald Trump.

Mark Carney and the Liberal Party have implemented "dollar for dollar" counter-tariffs on $28 billion worth of U.S. goods. While the government maintains a 44% lead in overall voting intentions, support for this hardline stance is significantly lower among Millennial and Generation Z adults, who face higher economic risks from the trade conflict.

Public pressure is mounting for a legislative response, with 62% of respondents wanting Parliament recalled before late September to debate and vote on the national strategy. Meanwhile, 37% of polled Canadians believe Pierre Poilievre, leader of the Progressive Conservative Party, would have handled the trade issues more effectively than the Prime Minister.
