Andy Burnham Launches National Centre for Information Defence

Prime Minister Andy Burnham announced the creation of the National Centre for Information Defence during his first address to the United Nations General Assembly in New York. The new agency, led by the Office for the Prime Minister and Cabinet, is tasked with detecting, attributing, and disrupting information warfare, specifically targeting an "industrial-scale assault" by the Russian government.

Burnham accused Russian agencies of spending approximately £1.3 billion annually to manipulate information, using bots, fake websites, and the forged branding of 28 British organizations to interfere in the 2019 general election. He warned that artificial intelligence would multiply these threats and announced a new AI defense partnership with the United States to protect critical national infrastructure. Burnham also positioned the UK as an "honest broker" to lead global AI safety standards during its G20 Presidency next year.

Addressing concerns over free speech, Defence Secretary Wes Streeting clarified that the government is not interested in policing domestic political dissent, asserting that the freedom to challenge government policy remains fundamental to British democracy. The UK government also plans to integrate economic efforts to tackle inequality, noting that those struggling with the cost of living are more vulnerable to foreign influence.

While the UK sought global AI transparency, U.S. President Donald Trump rejected efforts to create a "globalist scheme" to control the technology. Downing Street also rejected Trump's suggestions that UK rhetoric toward Moscow had been "too tough," maintaining that Russia's hybrid attacks are "egregious and unacceptable."
