Hegseth Purges Military Leadership Amid Escalating War With Iran

Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth ousted dozens of senior military leaders and blocked minority promotions while the U.S. conducted military operations against Iran.

Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth executed a sweeping purge of the Pentagon's senior leadership beginning in early 2026, removing more than two dozen high-ranking officers and service secretaries. On April 2, Hegseth forced the immediate retirement of Army Chief of Staff General Randy George, alongside General David Hodne and Major General William Green Jr. General Christopher LaNeve, a former aide to Hegseth, assumed the role of acting chief of staff.

These dismissals occurred during the fifth week of Operation Epic Fury, a U.S.-Israeli conflict with Iran. While the Pentagon cited a need to align leadership with President Donald Trump's vision, reports indicate the purges were driven by ideological conflicts. General George allegedly clashed with Hegseth after resisting demands to block the promotions of four Black and female officers. Critics and whistleblowers described the environment as a culture of mass paranoia, characterized by the use of polygraph tests and nondisclosure agreements to ensure loyalty.

Concurrent with the leadership shake-up, the U.S. intensified strikes on Iranian infrastructure. President Donald Trump vowed to hit Iran extremely hard to bring the nation back to the Stone Age. These threats drew condemnation from Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, who characterized them as an admission of intent to commit a massive war crime. The internal instability at the Pentagon reportedly hampered military logistics and the visibility of key planners during the conflict. In April, Representative Yassamin Ansari announced plans to impeach Hegseth, alleging violations of the law of war following strikes on an Iranian elementary school and a desalination plant.
