Over 57,000 Canadians Petition to Remove Ambassador Pete Hoekstra

More than 57,000 Canadians have signed an online petition calling for the removal of Pete Hoekstra, the U.S. Ambassador to Canada. The petition requests that the federal government under Prime Minister Mark Carney declare Hoekstra persona non grata and establish a parliamentary committee to review U.S. diplomatic interference in Canadian affairs. Green Party Leader Elizabeth May plans to present the petition in the House of Commons this fall.

The movement stems from several controversial statements and alleged actions by Hoekstra. He suggested that the annexation of Canada by the United States would be a "great discussion" for President Donald Trump and Prime Minister Carney. He also criticized the "anti-American" tone of the 2025 federal election and questioned Canadian bans on American liquor.

Further allegations in the petition claim Hoekstra undermined bilateral relations by encouraging Alberta separatist movements, specifically citing undisclosed meetings between U.S. State Department officials and the Alberta Prosperity Project. Hoekstra has defended his rhetoric, stating his role is to "present the president's views."

The U.S. Embassy in Ottawa acknowledged the petition but declined to provide further comment on the matter.
