White House Eases Russian Energy Sanctions Before Midterms
The United States government waived sanctions and tariffs on Russian oil and gas to lower energy prices ahead of the November midterm elections.
The Federal government of the United States eased sanctions on Russian diesel and waived broad tariffs targeting Russia and the buyers of its oil and gas. The administration took this action to lower energy prices before the November midterm elections, moving two days before provisions of the Graham Act were scheduled to take effect.
Alongside the sanctions relief, the administration demanded that Ukraine cease its strikes on Russian refineries. The president further suggested that Ukrainians "get a new president."
Secretary of State Marco Rubio praised ancient Athenians for repelling invaders during this period of reduced economic pressure on Russia. The policy shift directly benefits Vladimir Putin and the Russian energy sector.
