Russia Targets Ukraine Infrastructure as Kyiv Launches Massive Drone Strikes

Russia is targeting Ukrainian energy and transport grids with new jet-powered drones while Ukraine conducts wide-scale strikes on Russian missile fuel plants and data centers.

Russia has shifted its military strategy to target critical transportation and energy infrastructure in Ukraine to cripple supply lines and psychological resilience. Recent massive airstrikes on power grids and bridges in Kyiv led Mayor Vitali Klitschko to advise residents to consider temporary relocation, stating the situation has become a "matter of survival."

Russian forces are deploying a new generation of jet-powered Geran drones that use wireless mesh networks to bypass electronic jamming. Former Google CEO Eric Schmidt warned that Russia has eliminated Ukraine's technological edge in drone warfare and may deploy up to 80,000 of these drones by late December 2026. Meanwhile, Ukrainian Railways reported that 521 locomotives have been hit since 2022, with the majority of strikes occurring this year.

In response, Ukrainian drones conducted overnight strikes on October 9 targeting Russian military and industrial infrastructure across 19 regions. Key targets included the Redkino Experimental Plant in the Tver region, which produces fuel for Kh-55 and Kh-101 cruise missiles, and an oil depot in the Belgorod region. In the Kaluga region, drones damaged a Yandex data center, marking the second consecutive day of attacks on the technology company's facilities. The Russian Defense Ministry claimed its air defenses intercepted 505 Ukrainian drones, while officials reported casualties in Belgorod and Kaluga.
