Trump Prioritizes Economic Pressure Over Military Strikes Against Iran

President Donald Trump announced a three-part strategy against Iran combining economic pressure, monitoring of Iranian internal weakness, and military force. Trump claimed the United States Navy has seized control of the Strait of Hormuz and removed Iranian mines, though the waterway has been effectively closed by Iran since February 28 during an ongoing war involving the U.S. and Israel.

While Trump previously threatened massive military strikes, he recently shifted priority toward economic warfare. He stated the U.S. is low-keying its approach and semi-negotiating, citing Iran's rampant inflation and lack of funds to pay its troops as critical vulnerabilities. This economic pressure is compounded by a U.S. naval blockade and a projected 6% economic contraction in Iran this year.

Tehran remains divided over how to respond. President Masoud Pezeshkian seeks an agreement to avoid total economic collapse, while IRGC commander Ahmad Vahidi opposes concessions. Iran's Supreme National Security Council chief, Mohammad Bagher Zolghadr, has demanded the lifting of all sanctions, the withdrawal of U.S. forces from the region, and war reparations before reopening the Strait of Hormuz. Trump has countered by demanding that Iran pay reparations for various conflicts, including the 2000 attack on the USS Cole.
