Trump Threatens Iran After Ceasefire Collapse and Naval Strikes

The fragile ceasefire between the United States and Iran has nearly collapsed 11 days after implementation, leading Donald Trump to threaten to restart hostilities and complete the job. The tension follows a June 17 memorandum of understanding intended to end the war, lower energy prices, and unwind decades of sanctions, including the issuance of General License X to allow Iranian oil sales in US dollars.

Military hostilities escalated over the weekend after US Central Command launched strikes on Iranian surveillance and air defense sites in response to an Iranian attack on a Panamanian-flagged oil tanker. The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps retaliated with drone and missile attacks against Bahrain and Kuwait. The US Navy is currently expanding a maritime route near Oman to bypass Iranian oversight in the Strait of Hormuz, a move Tehran opposes.

Despite the violence, both nations have agreed to a temporary halt in kinetic activity. Delegations are scheduled to meet in Doha, Qatar, on Tuesday for emergency talks to salvage the agreement. These discussions will prioritize maritime stability in the strait over nuclear program negotiations. The US and Iran are also attempting to negotiate an interim deal covering sanctions, nuclear stockpiles, and the cessation of fighting in Lebanon between Israel and Hezbollah.
