Mark Rutte Meets Donald Trump to Coordinate Ankara NATO Summit

NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte met President Donald Trump in Washington to discuss defense spending and alliance unity ahead of the July summit in Ankara.

NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte visited Washington D.C. on June 25-26, 2026, to coordinate preparations for the upcoming July 7-8 NATO Summit in Ankara. During a White House meeting with President Donald Trump, Rutte worked to ease tensions over the alliance's support for U.S. actions in the Middle East. Rutte defended Trump's approach toward Iran, arguing that preventing Tehran from obtaining nuclear capabilities enhanced international security.

To address Trump's criticisms of ally contributions, Rutte presented data showing that European and Canadian defense spending increased by nearly 20% in 2025, with cumulative extra expenditures exceeding one trillion USD since 2016. He stated that these allies are now on a trajectory to equalize their spending with the United States. Following the White House meeting, Rutte met with Members of Congress and spoke at the Atlantic Council, emphasizing the need for a revolution in defense industry and investment.

Despite these diplomatic efforts, the alliance faces internal instability. Air Chief Marshal John Stringer urged for a demonstration of unity in Ankara following conflicting signals from President Trump regarding troop posture in Europe and a surprise six-month review of American forces announced by Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth. Additionally, the U.K. government is managing the fallout from former Defense Secretary John Healey's resignation over insufficient military spending plans, though his successor, Dan Jarvis, maintains Britain will meet its commitments.
