Israel Threatens Gaza Displacements Over Drone and Kite Launches
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Israel Katz ordered the military to target Hamas leaders and evacuate Gaza neighborhoods to stop drone and kite launches.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Israel Katz have ordered the Israel Defense Forces to aggressively counter an increasing threat of drones, kites, and balloons launched from the Gaza Strip toward the western Negev. Netanyahu characterized armed drone swarms as a global problem and directed the defense establishment to strike weapons, operators, and launch sites to protect border communities.
Following a security assessment after ten kites crossed into Israel since Friday, the Israeli government warned it would intensify the killing of Hamas officials and displace more Palestinians from Gaza if the launches continue. Defense Minister Katz stated that Israel regards every launch as an act of war, regardless of whether the objects carry explosives. The military intercepted one kite on Sunday, the first such interception since 2018, though officials noted it carried no explosive materials.
Proposed countermeasures include the assassination of Hamas leaders and operatives responsible for the launches, as well as the evacuation of residential neighborhoods used as launch sites. This escalation occurs despite an October 2025 U.S.-backed ceasefire. Palestinian health officials report that over 1,286 Palestinians have been killed in Gaza since the truce took effect, contributing to a total death toll of at least 73,420 since the conflict began in October 2023.
