Kim Jong Un Tests New Hypersonic Missile System

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un oversaw the successful test of a new weapon system on September 20, 2026, which he characterized as a striking demonstration of ultra-modern defense technology. The tests, conducted by the North Korea Missile Administration, involved the Hwasongpho-11Ma-1, a short-range ballistic missile believed to be equipped with a hypersonic glide vehicle designed to evade anti-missile defenses.

Launched from the Wonsan area toward the East Sea, the two missiles were tracked by the South Korean military. While the Joint Chiefs of Staff of the Republic of Korea estimated flight distances between 450 and 600 kilometers, North Korean data claimed a range of 908.2 kilometers. Kim Jong Un, accompanied by his daughter Ju Ae, stated the technology would give adversaries an incurable headache and a very cruel and unavoidable blow.

The launches occurred amid heightened regional tensions following U.S.-led Pacific Vanguard naval drills and coincided with the opening of the UN General Assembly in New York. Japan's Defense Minister Shinjiro Koizumi and South Korean officials condemned the tests as violations of UN Security Council resolutions. The military activity persists despite conciliatory signals from U.S. President Donald Trump and South Korean President Lee Jae Myung, who suggested a trade-off between sanctions relief and a halt to further weapons development.

In a parallel diplomatic move, North Korea rejected an International Atomic Energy Agency resolution demanding a halt to its nuclear activities, with Kim Yo Jong declaring the state's status as a nuclear-armed power to be permanent and irreversible.
