Trump Exempts Canadian Agricultural Products From 50% Tariffs

President Donald Trump exempted nine categories of Canadian agricultural and forestry products from tariffs following lobbying by Maine Senator Susan Collins.

President Donald Trump exempted nine categories of Canadian agricultural and forestry products from 50% tariffs on October 23. The relief includes corrugated paper, refrigeration equipment, packing machinery, and seaweed and algae products. Senator Susan Collins announced the move, noting the exemptions are intended to support Maine producers of blueberries, potatoes, and apples.

The action follows a trade conflict that began in August when the administration imposed tariffs on $20 billion of Canadian goods after negotiations failed. This led to retaliatory tariffs from Canada and U.S. import bans. While the White House initially described reports of the exemptions as speculation, Collins confirmed the relief. The administration may raise levies on other Canadian goods to ensure the total value of affected exports remains at $20 billion.

The decision comes as Collins, a Republican, faces a competitive re-election race in Maine against Democrat Troy Jackson. Similar trade pressures are impacting Republican candidates in Michigan and New Hampshire, where candidates have called for an end to the trade war.
