Trump Blames GOP Lawmakers as Democrats Eye Senate Majority

Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer claims his party is on a path to recapture the Senate majority in the 2026 midterm elections. This optimism follows a shift by the Cook Political Report, which designated Senate races in Texas and Iowa as toss-ups. Democrats are currently trailing in a 53–47 Republican majority, but Schumer suggests the electoral map has opened up. Key battlegrounds now include Michigan, Iowa, Texas, Ohio, Maine, and Alaska.

Donald Trump has responded to the political climate by suggesting congressional Republicans will be solely responsible if the party loses control of either chamber. He has criticized GOP lawmakers for failing to pass the Save America Act and urged Senate Republicans to eliminate the filibuster to ensure the bill's passage. Trump has claimed that while voters are angry at Republicans, they are not angry at him.

Republican leadership remains publicly confident. National Republican Senatorial Committee Chair Tim Scott maintains the GOP will retain its majority. White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt has also stated the president is committed to helping Republicans across the board. However, Trump has explicitly targeted Senate Majority Leader John Thune and other lawmakers, warning that the party will suffer if they remain unwise in their approach to the elections.
