Israel Strikes Syrian Airbase Amid Tensions With Turkey

Benjamin Netanyahu authorized airstrikes on a Syrian military base to block Turkish entrenchment, sparking warnings from the U.S. over faulty intelligence and regional escalation.

Israeli aircraft conducted eight strikes on the Abu al-Duhur military airbase in Syria's Idlib province on August 18, targeting runways and a hangar. Benjamin Netanyahu defended the operation as a necessary warning to prevent Turkish military entrenchment moving south and to stop Damascus from breaching the security status quo. However, U.S. Ambassador to Turkey Tom Barrack stated that U.S. intelligence found the claims of Turkish troop presence at the base to be untrue, calling the unannounced attack a dangerous game and an unnecessary escalation.

U.S. officials suggested the strike may have been intended to bait Turkey for domestic political gain ahead of Israel's October 27 Knesset elections, where the Likud party has integrated President Recep Tayyip Erdogan into its campaign rhetoric. Turkey and Syria both denied any plans for a Turkish military presence at the facility. The incident nearly triggered a direct military confrontation, as Turkish forces considered scrambling aircraft in response to Israeli jets approaching their border without notification.

Diplomatic tensions have further intensified as the Government of Turkey requested Interpol red notices for Netanyahu related to a prosecution over an attack on the Global Sumud Flotilla. While Washington expressed deep concern, both nations continue to cooperate on counter-ISIS operations. In a separate operation on Saturday, the Israel Defense Forces conducted a drone strike near Beit Jinn in southwestern Syria, targeting a vehicle allegedly preparing an improvised explosive device attack.
