Trump Launches 'Economic D-Day' to Isolate Iran
President Donald Trump announced Operation Economic Fury, a massive sanctions campaign designed to collapse the Iranian government and end its nuclear program.
President Donald Trump has launched Operation Economic Fury, a campaign he termed "Economic D-Day," described as the most crushing economic operation ever taken against any country. The initiative aims to isolate Iran, force the end of its nuclear program, and ensure the full reopening of the Strait of Hormuz. U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent warned that the United States will use its full might against any nation or company that continues to purchase Iranian oil, transfer funds, or engage in maritime transport with Tehran.
The Government of Iran has condemned the plan as a "declaration of war" and "economic terrorism." First Vice President Mohammad Reza Aref and Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi argued that decades of economic pressure have failed to alter the nation's resolve, with Araghchi claiming the campaign is a diversion from a U.S. national debt that has reached $40 trillion. Military chief of staff Ali Abdollahi further warned regional allies that any assistance provided to the U.S. military constitutes participation in U.S. military operations.
China has rejected the U.S. efforts, with Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian stating that unilateral sanctions lacking UN Security Council authorization are illegal. This escalation occurs amid an ongoing six-month war between the two nations and conflicting reports regarding the existence of a U.S.-ensured stealth oil corridor in the Strait of Hormuz.
