Russian Territorial Advances Stall in Ukraine During March 2026
Russian forces failed to gain territory in Ukraine for the first time in two and a half years, coinciding with intensified aerial assaults and rejected ceasefire proposals.
Russian forces made no territorial gains in Ukraine during March 2026, marking the first month without forward progress in approximately two and a half years. According to the Institute for the Study of War and the Critical Threats Project, Ukrainian forces recaptured approximately 9 square kilometers during the same period. This stagnation follows a trend of slowing gains that saw Russia seize 319 square kilometers in January and 123 square kilometers in February.
Analysts attribute the slowdown to effective Ukrainian counter-offensives and Russian communication restrictions, including a ban on Telegram and the loss of Starlink access. Volodymyr Zelensky and Defense Secretary Mykhailo Fedorov requested that Elon Musk cut Starlink access for Russian forces in February, which contributed to the operational deceleration. Despite the territorial stalemate, Russia intensified its aerial campaign, firing at least 6,462 long-range drones in March, a 28 percent increase over February.
On April 3, Russia launched a massive assault involving 37 missiles and over 540 drones targeting 20 locations, including Kyiv and Kharkiv. The Russian government also warned foreign embassies in Kyiv to evacuate ahead of potential strikes tied to Victory Day. President Zelensky accused Russia of rejecting a ceasefire proposal, stating that the Russian choice is an "obvious spurning of a ceasefire and of saving lives."
