Kiren Rijiju Accuses Rahul Gandhi of Disrupting Parliament
Union Minister Kiren Rijiju accused Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi of damaging parliamentary decorum and mocking Prime Minister Narendra Modi's diplomatic style.
Union Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju accused Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi and the Indian National Congress of intentionally disrupting the Monsoon Session of Parliament to avoid legislative debate. Rijiju claimed the opposition prioritized sloganeering and creating a ruckus over parliamentary business, asserting that Gandhi failed to uphold the dignity of his office. He further stated that opposition members were venting frustration in the House following repeated election defeats and described the INDIA bloc as fragmented.
The conflict extended beyond the House following an August 13 event at the Rachnatmak Congress national convention in New Delhi. Rijiju condemned Gandhi for parodying Prime Minister Narendra Modi's diplomatic style by hugging party leader Sandeep Dikshit, calling the act superficial theatricality that damages India's global image. Gandhi countered by stating the government's job is to protect national interests rather than hugging politicians.
During the session, which adjourned sine die after 19 sittings, the Congress party demanded a statement from Union Home Minister Amit Shah regarding police action against protesters at Jantar Mantar on July 20. While the opposition alleged Shah was absent from proceedings, Rijiju dismissed these claims, stating Shah remained on the premises but could not enter the House due to the disruptions. Although 12 bills were passed during the session, only the Public Examinations (Prevention of Unfair Means) Amendment Bill, 2026, was formally debated.
