Texas Governor Halts 1,800 AI Data Center Approvals
Governor Greg Abbott paused approvals for 1,800 AI data center projects to audit their impact on the Texas power grid and water supply.
Governor Greg Abbott halted approvals for approximately 1,800 AI data center projects seeking connections to the Texas electric grid. The pause allows state regulators to conduct a comprehensive audit of cooling systems, tax incentives, and the consumption of water and electricity to protect the state's utility infrastructure.
Abbott stated that developers "basically dug their own grave" by ignoring the pace of expansion and failing to engage with local communities. Under the new requirements, future projects must meet strict statewide standards and secure approval from local communities before proceeding.
President Donald Trump criticized the decision, calling it a "mistake." He argued that data centers increase property values and provide significant tax revenue to the communities that welcome them, suggesting that any community rejecting AI is making a mistake because their taxes would otherwise decrease.
The move follows a surge in peak electricity demand, which the Electric Reliability Council of Texas reports has increased by more than 500 percent. This conflict reflects a broader national trend of public opposition to AI infrastructure driven by utility costs and environmental concerns.
