Ukraine and Russia Exchange Massive Drone Strikes on Infrastructure

Russia and Ukraine engaged in a series of escalating drone and shelling attacks between September 20 and September 22, 2026, targeting both civilian centers and energy infrastructure. Russian forces struck multiple Ukrainian regions, killing at least 16 people, including several children. Notable attacks occurred in the Kyiv region, where a mother and two children were killed, and in Zaporizhzhia, where strikes damaged residential buildings, a shopping center, and a cultural heritage building at Zaporizhzhia National University.

Simultaneously, Ukraine executed its largest drone campaign to date against Russian territory. Massive strikes on the Moscow region killed at least five people and damaged an oil refinery, with conflicting reports from Russian officials claiming between 249 and 450 drones were intercepted. Further attacks targeted the Kuibyshev refinery in Samara and the Bashneft-UNPZ refinery in Bashkortostan, resulting in at least one death in Samara.

Amid the violence, U.S. President Donald Trump claimed Russia has "lost control of its Diesel Oil Industry" and called for an end to the conflict. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy responded that de-escalation requires Russia to stop targeting energy sectors, critical infrastructure, and food exports. The two leaders have agreed to meet in New York during the United Nations General Assembly to discuss a resolution to the war.
