Donald Trump Launches Crushing Economic Operation Against Iran
President Donald Trump announced a maximum economic pressure campaign against Iran to force the collapse of its government through severe financial sanctions.
President Donald Trump announced a crushing economic operation against Iran on August 19, designed to force the collapse of the Iranian government through maximum economic pressure. The Trump administration cites the depreciation of the rial and falling national revenues as indicators that Iran is approaching a point of no return.
Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian acknowledged a sharp decline in national revenues. To maintain basic fiscal obligations, the Iranian government has relied on borrowing, printing money, and utilizing 45 billion dollars in gold reserves. Despite food inflation reaching nearly 130 percent in June and widespread economic hardship, the state continues to provide universal food assistance and employs diverse trade networks to prevent a total subsistence crisis.
While the U.S. government implements a blockade and sanctions to alter the leadership's calculations, some analysts suggest a total collapse is unlikely during the current U.S. presidential term. They further note that economic breakdown may not necessarily lead to political submission.
