Trump Threatens Canada With Tariffs Over Wildfire Smoke Pollution

President Donald Trump threatened to impose new tariffs on Canadian goods or demand financial damages after massive wildfires in Ontario and British Columbia sent hazardous smoke across the U.S. Midwest and Northeast. Trump characterized Canada's forest management as "willful negligence," claiming the U.S. was being "unnecessarily invaded by filthy, polluted, and unhealthy air" that cost the U.S. billions of dollars. Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney rejected the accusations, asserting that climate change is "everyone's responsibility — truly everyone's — including the United States." He detailed a response involving over 5,300 firefighters and nearly 300 aircraft to combat approximately 900 active fires. Ontario Premier Doug Ford called Trump's rhetoric "absolutely unacceptable," noting Canada's history of assisting U.S. states during natural disasters. Ford further challenged Trump to lift softwood lumber tariffs to help Canada fund forest clearing.

U.S. Republican lawmakers intensified the pressure; Senator Bernie Moreno introduced the CANADA FIRE Act to sanction Canadian officials, including asset freezes and visa revocations. Other lawmakers suggested the U.S. might engage in direct cross-border firefighting. Trump and Carney discussed the crisis during the FIFA World Cup final in New Jersey on July 19, though Trump reiterated his demands for accountability at Joint Base Andrews the following day.
