Iran Offers Mediation as Houthi Attack Hits Riyadh Airport
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi offered to facilitate talks between Saudi Arabia and Yemen following a deadly Houthi attack on a Riyadh airport.
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi urged Saudi Arabia to abandon its military approach in Yemen during a phone call with Saudi Foreign Minister Faisal bin Farhan on Sunday. Araghchi offered Iran's assistance in initiating direct political dialogue between Riyadh and Sana'a to reach a lasting settlement, warning that continuing military operations would further complicate the regional situation.
The diplomatic outreach follows a sharp escalation in conflict, including a Houthi attack on a passenger terminal at King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh on Saturday. The strike killed 12 people and injured approximately 300 others. Araghchi stated that there is "no military solution to the crises in West Asia" and argued that disregarding political solutions complicates the status quo.
Simultaneously, U.S. President Donald Trump announced he is reconsidering the United States' role in Yemen. Trump is weighing the resumption of military strikes on Iran, marking a shift from his previous position of delaying such actions until after the U.S. midterm elections. These developments occur against the backdrop of a Saudi-led military campaign and blockade in Yemen that has persisted since March 2015.
