Trump Welcomes Venezuelan Oil Shipment During Texas Campaign Tour

President Donald Trump visited a Venezuelan oil tanker in Port Arthur, Texas, to showcase a shipment of crude oil following the U.S. capture of Nicolas Maduro.

President Donald Trump and Secretary of State Marco Rubio visited an oil tanker in Port Arthur, Texas, on October 27, 2026, to welcome a shipment of 1 million barrels of Venezuelan crude oil. Trump characterized the shipment as a "gift" intended to lower gasoline and diesel prices before the November 3 midterm elections. The visit coincided with campaign stops in Corpus Christi and Lubbock to support Republican Senate candidate Ken Paxton.

The arrival of the oil follows a January 3 military assault on Caracas, during which U.S. forces captured President Nicolas Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, transporting them to New York to face narco-terrorism charges. Since then, the U.S. has established control over Venezuela's oil industry and installed an interim government led by Delcy Rodriguez. In August 2026, the U.S. signed a 50-year strategic partnership agreement with North American Blue Energy Partners, acquiring 35% of the company with preferential production rights across 17 fields.

While the U.S. pursues energy cooperation, the redirection of Venezuelan oil to American refineries has halted supplies to Cuba, triggering a severe energy crisis on the island. Rubio has stated that Cuba "needs a very drastic change" and emphasized that the U.S. goal for Venezuela is to have an election. Despite the political victory, energy experts noted that the 1 million-barrel shipment is too small to significantly impact U.S. fuel prices, which averaged $4.27 per gallon on Tuesday.
