Canada Imposes $27.6 Billion Counter-Tariffs on U.S. Goods

Mark Carney responded to $28 billion in U.S. tariffs on Canadian goods by implementing $27.6 billion in counter-tariffs. Effective September 8, Canada will apply duties of up to 25% on specific U.S.-made farm equipment parts and components, including those for balers, combines, and livestock trailers.

While large machinery such as tractors and combines remain exempt, the measures are expected to impact the agricultural sector in Southwestern Ontario. Local equipment sellers and manufacturers warn that the increased costs will squeeze thin profit margins and likely be passed on to farmers.

To mitigate the financial impact, some businesses are considering reducing their on-site inventory or shifting their supply chains to source components from Europe. The trade dispute follows a breakdown in negotiations between the two nations, with the United States government having imposed tariffs of up to 50% on various Canadian-made goods.
