British Jewish Groups Hold Vigil Marking October 7 Anniversary
British Jewish organizations held a vigil in London to honor October 7 victims amid rising antisemitism and diplomatic tensions between the UK and Israel.
British Jewish organizations held a vigil at Richmond Terrace in London on Wednesday to honor the victims of the October 7 attacks in Israel. The event marked the third anniversary of the Hamas-led attacks, accompanied by tributes from community leaders and politicians.
Prime Minister Keir Starmer described the rise in antisemitic behavior in the UK since 2023 as disturbing and pledged protection for citizens. This follows data from the Community Security Trust, which reported 1,926 antisemitic incidents from January to June 2026, representing a one-fifth increase over the previous year. Mayor of Greater Manchester Andy Burnham also condemned the trend, stating that antisemitism has no place in the country.
Diplomatic tensions emerged as the Embassy of Israel criticized the British government, claiming its position toward Israel has changed substantially from the solidarity expressed immediately after the attacks. Meanwhile, the Metropolitan Police imposed stringent conditions on pro-Palestine student marches in London, with similar rallies planned at universities in Edinburgh and Glasgow.
