Trump Threatens Iran After Houthis Attack Saudi Oil Tankers

President Donald Trump warned that the United States will inflict "major military punishment" on Iran and the Houthis following a series of maritime escalations in the Red Sea. U.S. intelligence and Yemeni officials report that the escalation followed a secret July 13 flight from Tehran to Hodeidah, Yemen. The aircraft transported 10 to 21 Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps commanders, military equipment, and gold to train the Houthis on new missile systems. While Iran claimed the flight was for medical patients and a delegation, reports indicate Iran instructed the Houthis to prepare to close Red Sea oil routes if the U.S. attacked Iranian infrastructure. This coincided with reported Iranian strikes on U.S. military targets in Jordan and Kuwait.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio warned that costs to Tehran will increase until a meaningful peace agreement is reached. The African Union condemned the attacks as a grave threat to global supply chains.
