Trump Pressures Federal Reserve to Lower Interest Rates
President Donald Trump is lobbying the Federal Open Market Committee to cut interest rates to reduce the cost of servicing the 40 trillion dollar national debt.
Donald Trump and his administration are pressuring the Federal Open Market Committee and Chairman Kevin Warsh to lower base interest rates. The effort aims to reduce borrowing costs for consumers and the U.S. government as the national debt reaches 40 trillion dollars.
The United States Department of the Treasury recently reported that payments to service this debt exceeded 2 trillion dollars for the 2026 fiscal year. Bank of America analysts estimate that every 100 basis point increase in Federal Reserve rates adds 95 billion dollars in annual interest expenses for the Treasury.
Fiscal risks remain high, with the Congressional Budget Office forecasting that a 1.5% increase in rates above projections between 2026 and 2036 would expand deficits by 6 trillion dollars. Economists warn that these rising interest burdens could create a vicious cycle, potentially leading to a debt spiral if interest costs exceed nominal growth.
