Australia Considers EU Associate Membership Amid US Trade Tensions

Australian Trade Minister Don Farrell indicated that Australia is open to becoming an associate member of the European Union. This diplomatic shift follows a similar move by Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney and is driven by increasing trade hostility from the United States under President Donald Trump, specifically the 2025 Liberation Day tariffs, as well as previous unilateral tariffs from China.

While Australia and the EU reached a free-trade agreement in March 2026 to provide preferential access for Australian services and agriculture, the deal remains unratified. The agreement faces potential opposition in the Australian Senate from Nationals leader Matt Canavan, who described the arrangement as the "worst deal ever" for farmers.

European Parliament President Roberta Metsola stated she expects Australia and New Zealand to deepen their relationships with the EU. However, no official treaty provision for associate membership currently exists within the European Union framework.
