Donald Trump Urges Federal Reserve to Lower Interest Rates
President Donald Trump called on the Federal Reserve to reduce interest rates to sustain economic growth and lower national debt financing costs.
President Donald Trump called for the Federal Reserve to lower interest rates on Wednesday, arguing that strong economic data justifies easier monetary policy. He stated that lower rates are necessary to sustain economic growth and reduce the financing costs associated with the United States' national debt, which currently nears $40 trillion.
Trump criticized the Federal Reserve board as being politically motivated, though he praised Chairman Kevin Warsh, whom he nominated in May. During his remarks, the president compared U.S. rates to those in Switzerland, suggesting he has the right to cut business ties with the country due to the disparity in interest rates.
These demands follow the release of July FOMC minutes, which indicate that many Federal Reserve officials believe higher rates remain necessary to combat inflation that is still above the 2% target. In a separate move to manage government debt, the United States Department of the Treasury announced an expansion of its bond buyback program for debt with durations of at least 10 years.
