Takaichi and Xi Hold First Summit at APEC Forum

Japanese Prime Minister Takaichi Sanae and Chinese President Xi Jinping held their first summit meeting on October 31, 2025, during the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) forum in Gyeongju, South Korea. The two leaders reaffirmed their commitment to a strategic relationship of mutual benefit and a constructive, stable partnership.

During the talks, Takaichi raised Japanese concerns regarding China's maritime activities and its export restrictions on rare earths. Regarding the Taiwan question, she stated that Japan would abide by the position established in the 1972 Japan-China Joint Statement.

President Xi urged the new Japanese cabinet to maintain a correct perception of China and adhere to the four China-Japan political documents, which include the spirit of the Murayama Statement. Both nations emphasized their shared responsibility for regional peace and prosperity, with China highlighting the need for win-win cooperation in the digital economy and advanced manufacturing.
