Canada Holds Solo Ceremony for Gordie Howe Bridge

The Government of Canada will hold a solo ribbon-cutting ceremony on July 24, 2026, to celebrate the completion of the Gordie Howe International Bridge. Officials scrapped plans for a joint ceremony with the United States, citing President Donald Trump's recent threats to impose 50 per cent tariffs on various Canadian goods as making a joint event inappropriate. The $6.4-billion project, financed by Canada, connects Windsor, Ontario, and Detroit, Michigan, and is scheduled to open to traffic on July 27.

The opening follows months of friction, including February threats from Donald Trump to block the project entirely over trade grievances. A recently proposed agreement in principle stipulates that Canada will split 50 per cent of net bridge and crossing-related revenues with the U.S. for the first 15 years.

However, a dispute remains regarding the timing of these payments. Prime Minister Mark Carney and U.S. officials differ on whether Canada must be reimbursed for construction costs before revenue sharing begins.
