Israel Election Deadlock Leaves Netanyahu as Caretaker Prime Minister

Benjamin Netanyahu remains caretaker prime minister after parliamentary elections produced no clear majority, leaving Arab-led parties as potential kingmakers in a divided Knesset.

Israel's first general election since the October 7, 2023 attacks resulted in a political stalemate, with neither major bloc securing the 61 seats required for a majority in the 120-seat Knesset. Benjamin Netanyahu and his Likud party lead the count with approximately 21 percent of the vote, with his right-wing coalition projected to hold 54 seats. His primary challenger, Gadi Eisenkot, leads an opposition bloc with approximately 47 to 49 seats.

Arab-led parties achieved a historic showing, winning between 16 and 19 seats, which positions them as potential kingmakers. While some opposition figures urge a government of change by partnering with Arab parties, Netanyahu has dismissed such a coalition as "forbidden" and "treasonous." Meanwhile, Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich vowed to establish Jewish settlements in Gaza and expand those in the West Bank.

Economic markets reacted sharply to the uncertainty, with the Tel Aviv 125 index dropping as much as 3.5 percent. Despite the deadlock, the Bank of Israel raised its 2026 GDP growth forecast to 5.6 percent. U.S. President Donald Trump claimed his endorsement shifted momentum in favor of Netanyahu, who now emphasizes a "singular historical opportunity" to eliminate the threat of Iran in coordination with Trump.

President Isaac Herzog will determine which leader is tasked with forming a government. If no coalition is reached within six weeks, Israel may face new elections early next year. Until then, Netanyahu continues to serve as caretaker prime minister, though the new Knesset possesses the authority to begin legislating independently.
